A) Gruen war

An amazing treat for hops lovers.

Samuel Adams Hallertau Imperial Pilsner is a celebration of the extraordinary Hallertau Mittelfrueh hop variety. This rare Noble Bavarian hop, considered to be one of the best in the world, is prized for its quality and aromatic characteristics.

The beer, which is a deep golden color with a rich, creamy head, gives off an intense and complex Noble hop aroma unlike any other brew. With the first sip, beer enthusiasts will experience an explosion of hop flavor. The intensity of deep citrus, spicy Noble hop flavor is balanced with the slight sweetness from the malt. Due to the quality of the hops, this beer remains balanced and smoothly drinkable from beginning to end. The lingering "hop signature" is an amazing treat for hops lovers.

Haven't been able to taste the Beer Lover's Choice(TM) beers yet? We are now doing tastings at the brewery. So, while you are waiting for your tour to start you can help decide which of our new brews will be the next beer in our Samuel Adams Brewmaster's Collection.

Tours are available on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from Noon - 3pm, on Friday Noon - 5:30pm, and on Saturday from 11am - 3pm. Tours start approximately every 30 minutes. You want the inside scoop on the tours? Come to the earlier tours, they are a little less crowded and a little more intimate.

In my opinion, there is no better Samuel Adams experience than the one you get here at the Boston Brewery.

TOUR HOURS
Tue, Wed & Thu: Noon-3pm
Fridays: Noon-5:30pm
Saturdays: 11am-3pm

Tours start approximately every 30 minutes. Each tour has limited space, so be sure to arrive early!

OctoberFest Kielbasa by Me!
I thought it was time for one of my own favorite recipes!

Ingredients
12 oz. Samuel Adams OctoberFest
1 large white onion, chopped
1 large green pepper, chopped
1 large red pepper, chopped
2 packages of Polish kielbasa
Mustard (whatever style you like)

Instructions
In a bowl, mix 1 bottle of OctoberFest with 2 to 3 oz of mustard. Pour mixture into a skillet over medium-high heat. Add chopped onions and peppers. Cover and heat for 5 minutes. Cut kielbasa into 1 to 2 inch slices and add them to the pan. Cover and heat for another 15 minutes. Serve over rice - using as much or little sauce as you like.

And you pair this with a tall stein of OctoberFest...Prost!

Haven't learned about Food & Beer pairings? Head to www.samueladams.com and go to the World of Beer. Then click on the Beer & Food section and start exploring.

Cheers!

Prost Ralf!

Alright, buckle up everyone. We are heading into a couple of really fun months to finish off 2007 and we are going to have some great things going on. Just a little heads up.

Now. What's On Tap for September?

We are only a few days away from the 7th Annual Samuel Adams® OctoberFest! We're rolling out the barrels, throwing the brats on the grill and warming up the oompah band. And we will be serving an amazing variety of Samuel Adams® brews, just for you. I actually can't think of an event where we have served a wider variety of our beer. It's going to be great! (details below.)

While that is going on, we are releasing Samuel Adams® Hallertau Imperial Pilsner. Not released since 2005, this amazing pilsner is taking hops to a whole new level (see below). After that, the Bavarian Hop Harvest is upon us and we are celebrating it with an Open House dedicated to our Bavarian Noble Hops.

Also On Tap this month...we are announcing the next homebrew competition, the Patriot Homebrew Contest. Plus, you can try my own OctoberFest recipe...

Have a great month everyone and hope to see you at OctoberFest!

Cheers!
- Brian

So, have I mentioned this OctoberFest thing we are doing? I think I have. But let me mention it one more time just in case.

7th Annual Samuel Adams OctoberFest
September 14th & 15th
The Castle at Park Plaza

This celebration is not only going to be a great OctoberFest celebration but also a celebration of beer. Last month, I told you that we were going to have 14 styles of beer available. I apologize, but that was wrong. We will be serving 16 STYLES OF BEER. And here they are...

Samuel Adams Boston Lager® (on tap)
Samuel Adams OctoberFest (on tap)
Sam Adams Light®
Samuel Adams Black Lager (on tap)
Samuel Adams Cherry Wheat® (on tap)
Samuel Adams Hallertau Imperial Pilsner (on tap)
Samuel Adams Boston Ale
Samuel Adams Weiss Beer (on tap)
Samuel Adams Honey Porter
Samuel Adams Brown Ale
Samuel Adams Hefeweizen
Samuel Adams Cream Stout
Samuel Adams Pale Ale
Samuel Adams Dunkelweizen
Samuel Adams Irish Red Ale
Samuel Adams Utopias® (Fri night only)

Whoa...this is going to be one hell of a time. And you can enjoy almost all of them in your own authentic Samuel Adams OctoberFest stein (certainly not Samuel Adams Utopias - 2oz samples only.) The Weiss Beer is being brewed specifically for this event and won't be available anywhere else!

Our friends at the Beer Summit are helping us pull this celebration together and it looks like it is going to be the best one we have ever done. Authentic German food and music, stein hoisting contests, great prizes and most importantly...quality, flavorful beer!

So, mark the date, grab some friends and get your tickets. Saturday tickets are $15 and that includes a Samuel Adams OctoberFest stein and your first beer. Friday night is a VIP night - costs a little more, but definitely worth it.

For tickets and more information, visit the Beer Summit website or our Samuel Adams website. We received a big rush for tickets after last month's WOT, so get yours early.

  • What: 7th Annual Samuel Adams OctoberFest
  • When: Saturday, September 15th - Noon to 10pm
(VIP Night on Friday the 14th)
  • Where: The Castle at Park Plaza

As I am sure you know, we love our hops around here. And Jim and our brewers have a certain obsession for our Bavarian Noble hops, specifically the Hallertau Mittelfrueh variety, prized for its unique flavor and aroma. It is the soul of our Samuel Adams Boston Lager. In 2005, we released Samuel Adams Imperial Pilsner 2005 Harvest, a beer that showcased the Hallertau Mittelfrueh hop. It was a truly amazing beer that took these hops to another level.

Well, I am pleased to announce that we are putting these hops on a pedestal again with Samuel Adams Hallertau Imperial Pilsner. This one-of-a-kind brew uses enormous, almost reckless, quantities of Noble Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops from the Bavarian region in Germany, 12 pounds per barrel to be exact, which give the beer an unmatched flavor dimension and complexity. To put that in perspective, a barrel of Samuel Adams Boston Lager contains about 1 pound of hops and ordinary beers contain about an ounce and a half. So that's about a hundred times the hops of an ordinary beer!

This is a seriously hoppy beer, but very different from other "hop-bombs" you may have tried. The Hallertau Mittelfrueh hops are coveted for their aroma and unique flavor, making Hallertau Imperial Pilsner incredibly fragrant and "hoppy", but not too bitter. For all the hops thrown into this beer, it is amazingly balanced.

This is one of the most unique beers we make and I am thrilled it is back! Enjoy it... because who knows when we will do this one again.

Imagine going to a pro football game and being able to drink your own homebrew? Pretty nice, right? Well, we thought so too. (Since I am a HUGE football fan, I think this is one of the coolest things we have ever done.)

I am happy to announce the Samuel Adams® Patriot Homebrew Contest. You brew your own beer and send it to us. Jim and the brewers judge the entries. The winner will have their beer brewed here at the Samuel Adams® Boston Brewery and served at Gillette Stadium(TM) for the 2008 Football Season.

Click below to see the commercial. You might even recognize someone in there...

So, like Steve and Andre said, go to the website for all the contest details and get brewing! The link is right on the front page.

After a year of watching our Bavarian Noble hops grow, we are about ready for harvest! Christian has checked in one last time with his hop report. The next time we will hear from him is when we are in Bavaria for the Hop Selection. Take a look at some of the latest images.

From Christian:

All cones have reached the final size. 50 to 70% of the cones are ready. Because of the rainy weather the degree of ripeness goes forward slowly. Many farmers have rescheduled start of harvest some days. But within the next week most of the growers will start the picking. There are some cones with wind damages on the vine.

All in all, the harvest is looking like it will be better than last year's, but we won't truly be able to tell until we get over there. We'll keep you posted after the harvest!

In honor of the upcoming Hop Harvest and the release of Samuel Adams Hallertau Imperial Pilsner - we are dedicating September's Open House to the Bavarian Noble Hop.

We'll talk to you about why we use Bavarian Noble Hops, what we like about them and what they contribute to our beers. We'll have Hallertau Imperial Pilsner ON TAP, which can only be found in limited areas and here at the Brewery. Plus some food pairings for this amazing beer.

RSVP HERE. It will be a very fun night and you will go home with a much better understanding of hops.

Hearty and smooth, blended with five varieties of malted barley.

The first thing you notice when pouring a glass of this seasonal beer is the color. Samuel Adams OctoberFest has a rich, deep amber hue which itself is reflective of the season. Samuel Adams OctoberFest is a malt lover's dream, masterfully blending together five roasts of barley to create a delicious harmony of sweet flavors including caramel and toffee. The beer is kept from being overly sweet by the elegant bitterness imparted by the German Noble hops. Samuel Adams OctoberFest provides a wonderful transition from the lighter beers of summer to the winter's heartier brews.

As the Summer is really heating up so are things down here at the Brewery! If you are going to be in Boston, or if you are local and just have never made it to the Brewery, come on down and say hi. Tours are available on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday from Noon - 3pm, on Friday Noon - 5:30pm, and on Saturday from 11am - 3pm. Tours start approximately every 30 minutes.

The new tour hours are really going great and we can't wait to meet more Sam Fans. In my opinion, there is no better Samuel Adams® experience than the one you get here at the Boston Brewery.

Samuel Adams Summer Ale Pork Tenderloin
One last grilling recipe for the summer!

Ingredients
1 quart water
3 bottles of Samuel Adams® Summer Ale
1 cup salt
½ cup brown sugar
1 tablespoon whole peppercorns
1/3 cup crushed fennel seeds
1 teaspoon dried sage
Peel of 1 tangerine/orange
Peel of 1 lemon
4 whole pork tenderloins (3-4 lbs in all)

Instructions
Combine all of the ingredients, except the pork, in a large pot. Bring to a boil and then reduce to a simmer. Mix until the salt and sugar all dissolved, then simmer for an additional 56 minutes. Transfer this brine into a container and refrigerate.

When the brine is quite cool (less than 50 degrees), add the pork tenderloins and place a heavy plate on top of them to keep them submerged. Marinate the pork in the refrigerator for 3 days. Then remove the pork, rinse with water and pat dry.

Grill the pork tenderloins to an internal temp of 160 degrees or about 10-12 minutes. Each tenderloin should serve 2 people.

Pair it with your last bottles of Samuel Adams Summer Ale to bring out the citrus flavor in the brine or your first bottle of Samuel Adams OctoberFest to complement the caramelized grilled flavors of the pork. Either should work nicely.

Cheers Ralf,

Welcome to the Dog Days of Summer! I promise you, nowhere is that statement more true than down here at the brewery in August. It gets so hot down here! But, at least we have plenty of cold beer to quench our thirst when we get a little parched. (I'll stop complaining now...)

I think you guys know by now that we brew 21 award-winning styles of beer. And while brewing all kinds of beer makes things a little crazy here at the brewery, it also allows us to offer a tremendous amount of variety to beer drinkers. Personally, I like the fact that I can go into the cooler and choose from ten to twelve beers that are in season. Because while I could drink Samuel Adams Boston Lager® all year round, I need a little variety in my life.

And this is also the time of year that we think about adding to our portfolio of beers through our Beer Lovers Choice" Election. See below for the 2007 Candidates.

What else is ON TAP this month...OCTOBERFEST IS COMING, a Wheat Beer Open House and one of Boston Cares biggest events of the year.

Get your lederhosen ready everyone!

Cheers!
- Brian

Ever wonder how we decide what the next style of Samuel Adams® beer should be? Well, the answer is we don't decide...YOU do. We are kicking off our 3rd Annual Beer Lover's Choice(TM) Election. You will decide the next brew to join the Samuel Adams® Brewmaster's Collection. You know what? I'll let Jim tell you all about it.

Click the picture below

In 2005, you elected Samuel Adams® Brown Ale. The 2006 winner was Samuel Adams® Honey Porter. Who are the contestants in the 2007 Election? The top two vote-getters at our Primary Election at March's Open House at the Brewery were Samuel Adams® Irish Red Ale and Samuel Adams® Dunkelweizen.

Samuel Adams Irish Red Ale
Pale and caramel malts give the beer its rich deep red color and distinctive caramel flavor. The sweetness of the malt is pleasantly balanced by the distinct hop bitterness, and in turn, the beer finishes with a smooth, earthy note from the East Kent Goldings hops.

Samuel Adams Dunkelweizen
Dunkelweizen translates into "dark wheat" and the beer is a darker version of the Bavarian wheat beers of the 15th century. Dark amber brown in color, this unfiltered ale is brewed with traditional Bavarian yeast, which imparts a wide spectrum of flavors and aromas from spicy clove and nutmeg to tropical fruit and banana. The result is a beer that is complex and flavorful, medium-bodied with a crisp finish.

So, check out our website to find out where the tastings are happening. If there isn't one in your area, make a trip to the brewery. We are doing BLC tastings every day down here at the brewery. So, while you are waiting for the tour to start you can have your chance to determine our next Samuel Adams brew.

Samuel Adams® OctoberFest is hitting the streets this month and that means the Samuel Adams OctoberFest Celebration is only a few short weeks away. On the weekend of September 14th & 15th, we will be hosting Boston's premier Oktoberfest celebration, the 7th Annual Samuel Adams OctoberFest at the Castle at Park Plaza.

Oh man...I can already hear the Jolly Kopperschmidts Oompah band playing in my ears. If you haven't made it to our OctoberFest Celebration before, this is definitely the year to go. Along with our friends from the Beer Summit, we are putting on our best celebration yet. Two German bands, authentic German food and 14 Samuel Adams styles of beer including two very special German beers, on draft, brewed only for this event!

Seriously, if you aren't going to Munich or Cincinnati, come here to Boston for OctoberFest. A wide variety of Samuel Adams beer, good friends, authentic food, music...want more? We'll have stein hoisting contests, polka dancing and more. I can already taste that first sip of OctoberFest. (mmmmmmmm...OctoberFest)
